I have photos in iPhoto which is not compatible with High Sierra and later. Where are my photos then?

You can import the iPhoto library into the Photos app library.
Press and hold down the option/ alt key while opening the Photos app.
A Choose Library dialogue will open.
From the list select the iPhoto library and click on Choose Library.
The contents of this library will now be imported for use in the Photos app.
