iphone SE 'sync failed to finish' error message

My iPhone SE was hanging up during backup on sync. Now, it seems to backup, but at step 4, I'm getting 'sync failed to finish' error messages.

Try updating your iPhone to the latest iOS version which is 14.7.1. Then try to sync your iPhone.

This was unsuccessful. I've tried every step suggested to no avail. (I'm running OS X Big Sur, iOS 14.6). My phone 'synced' once during this troubleshooting, but a new smart playlist (on my Mac) didn't show up on my phone, and subsequent attempts to sync gave me the same 'failed to finish' error (with no error number) - even with my VPN and security software disabled (which was never a problem in the past).

Made all the difference. I have my iPhone, iPad, Mac and MacBook all set for auto-updates. Don't know why this one didn't download/install. Thanks!
