“Tap to wake” only works after clicking power button, then tapping on screen on iPad Pro 3rd gen

I’m having this weird issue where I have “tap to wake” enabled on my 12.9” inch iPad Pro 3rd gen. If I tap on the screen, it won’t wake up. It will only walk up after first clicking on the power button, then tapping on the screen. It’s not a huge issue, it’s really just annoying and only seems to happen after about 5-10 minutes of being locked like it’s in a deep sleep or something.

Any ideas? I did purchase this pre-owned, so it’s possible there’s a slight defect. I did restore a previous iPad Pro backup, and I’ve read sometimes a clean install can clear these issues up.

If the issue is related to hardware then even a clean install won’t help. At this time, we do not know whether it is a hardware issue. Before you choose the clean install route, can you try the Reset All Settings option? That action will restore system wide settings to default factory settings. You may have to go back and set up a few things back to the way you like it. You will not lose any data with this action.

If you want to try it then open Settings ➔ General ➔ Reset ➔ Reset All Settings.
