Copying music from Mac to iPhone

I want to add music in my Mac library to my iPhone. I don't want to subscribe to any Apple music service. At one time, one could simply drag a song or album to the iphone icon. Or somehow synch music. Now it looks like you can't. How do I do it? I'm using a 2071 Mac Pro running Big Sur 11.4.

If you don't have a subscription, you can sync your phone directly by connecting via USB. See procedure in here:
