Change screen recording format to mp4?

How can I change the screen recording CMD+SHIFT+5 to a smaller format like mp4? the mov files are very large and quickly burst my macbook hard drive.

Thank you. I use Handbrake. But the way is too cumbersome when you make 50 screenrcordings a day and have to convert them all. It would be nice if there was an option in the settings where you can set the format while recording.
