after daughter handed down her Mac air Sierra and wiped it clean we don’t know how to reformat… tried everything we seem to be able to find on forum the image is from recovery mode… no Macintosh HD or anything else … where do we go from here? Any help would be fantastic thank you?

That means the installer is not finding any usable disks to install it on.
Select the disk, and then click on Erase. Follow the onscreen prompts. Once its done, reboot and try again.

What model of MacBook Air is it exactly?
If you restart the Mac holding down option + command + r in 2011 or later Macs it should boot into Internet recovery and let you re-install the OS.

we tried that procedure, but still didn’t allow to reinstall attached is all we see…thank you for your reply
