Youtube Premium doesn't allow closing of miniplayer + background play

When closing a playing video in the YouTube app, a miniplayer appears. Upon closing said miniplayer, the video is stopped and I am unable to continue listening to the video. When accessing the player from the Control Access bar, pressing play does nothing and the player locks up. I'm forced to reopen the app, press play again and close the app.

This is infuriating as it is literally the only way to listen to music on YT in the background with no miniplayer or side tab and I'm paying $17 a month for a service that doesn't function properly. Currently using an Iphone 11 pro running 14.7.1. Any Ideas? Literally every other app I use doesn't have this problem.
