ipad disabled wont connect to itunes

my ipad that i am using as a home hub says 'ipad is disabled: connect to Itunes', however when i connect to itunes i get 'to allow access please respond on your ipad' however nothing happens on my ipad screen. has anyone else had this issue and have any tips for troubleshooting?

Are you turning the iPad off before connecting it to the computer and using the following instructions? If you forgot the passcode on your iPad, or your iPad is disabled - Apple Support
