IPad 5th generation (MP252LL/AR)
I bought my son a 5th generation iPad and was wondering if I made a mistake. Will it support the new iOS? He will likely just use it to watch YouTube videos so I didn’t want to spend a bunch. Thanks in advance.

NO one here knows when full Apple support will end for those iPad models that will support the up and coming iPadOS 15.
The 5th gen iPad gets another full year of support from Apple and third party developers.
So, that 2017 iPad 5th gen is fine for another full year.
Third party app support, typically, continues for 2-3 years AFTER Apple ends full support of a subset of their devices.
So, once Apple ends it full support for an iOS/iPadOS device, third party app support will continue for 2-3 years with third party app support dwindling away by that third year.
So, that iPad year and model will continue to get third party app support through to 2024 and pretty much ending with NO app support by sometime in 2025.
By 2025, that iPad will have had support for nearly 8 years.
