Wrong location caller ID

Every time someone calls me the caller ID says the number is from South Carolina. I didn’t answer calls for days thinking it was some odd scam, and I missed important calls. My iPhone is updated. My carrier settings are updated. All my apps are updated. I have seen other people report this problem and have yet to find a solution. It’s driving me bonkers that I never have an idea of who is calling me.

The location shown by a caller ID is the location assigned by the area code (first 3 digits) of the number. In the distant past an area code was used to route calls through the public switched telephone network (PSTN) to the appropriate telephone switching center to complete the call. Now it’s just a part of a 10 digit phone number, but the networks still “remember” the old meaning, and in the absence of any other information will use the location that the area code originally stood for. So my daughter in Washington State still shows “New Jersey” as her location because her phone number's area code is 201.
