Child account

I recently created an account for my 11 year old son. Given that he is not 13 yet, I was instructed to create an account under his mother or myself. We recently actively an iPhone 6 Plus for my son but my wife's contacts and text messages are shared on his phone.

Is there a setting to prevent the sharing of contacts and text messages?

You must still be using your wife’s Apple ID on the phone that you gave to your son. You should erase his phone and start all over again. When you get to the point in the set up process where it says to sign into your Apple ID, use his Apple ID that you created for him.

This explains how to completely erase the phone.

That indicates that the iPhone is not set up using your son's Apple ID. Contacts and text messages are not shared between Apple IDs even when using Family Sharing.

The following may help:

To clear the phone and start over, see: What to do before you sell, give away, or trade in your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support
