I am upgrading my iMac OS but it’s stuck

Question

I am upgrading my iMac to Big Sur and it’s stuck on “Less than a minute remaining” but it’s been more like 20 minutes. What do I do now?

iMac 21.5″, macOS 10.13

Wait an hour. If it still doesn’t complete, force shut it off and turn it back on.

My IMAC is stuck in the recent update- all day- when I force quit and restart it comes back to the same update screen. HELP
