How can I view hidden characters in TextEdit?

Concur that TextEdit, not being a word processing application like Pages, cannot display hidden characters. In Pages, and provided your document is compatible, you would use the View menu > Show Invisibles after opening the document.

I think you need to use a more elaborate word processor for that, like Pages.
