hp mouse not working on MacBook Pro

So, I'm trying to use an old hp mouse that is wireless, but has a USB receiver. I can move the cursor around using the mouse, but I am unable to click on anything using the mouse. I'm wondering if my mouse is just too old? I'm also wondering if since the MacBook Pro that I have uses USB-Cs, while the mouse is a USB-A, that it just doesn't work via convertor?

Thank you for clarifying.

What to Try:

Try the following. If nothing is of success, then it is likely the mouse, and you should just use an Apple mouse, for compatibility concerns.

Sometimes when changes are made to the system(i.e. Updates), system configurations (i.e. for Ports) become manipulated, technically. So, reset the SMC and NVRAM. Try performing each thrice. It may take sometime, being certain you have the time to perform these resets.

  • Create a New User:

Single out this user by creating a new user, seeing if this works. If it works, then it is a configuration issue with the current user. If it does not work, then it is the macOS giving your the issue.

  • Look Up Drivers:

See if your HP mouse uses drivers directly for macOS. Note that for macOS 10.15 Catalina and after, it takes only 64-bit drivers.

  • Compatibility:

Look at HP's site, seeing if this is meant to be interoperable with a Mac.

No Dongle is Needed:

Your Mac has Bluetooth built into it. So, a Bluetooth dongle ("USB receiver") is unnecessary.

Verify the Connection:

See if the Mouse is even seen:

  1. Hold Down: the Option key
  2. Click: the Apple menu
  3. Select:: About this Mac...
  4. Click: System Report... button
  5. Select: Bluetooth (on the left of screen)
  6. Look For: this Mouse
