Apple’s speak screen highlight not working in Files and on PDF

I was wondering if someone here or if apple could fix it in a update but I can not get Speak Screen’s highlight words to work in the Files app and the PDFs in that app. Speak Screen works find and so does Voiceover it’s just that the words are not highlight like they normally are in other platforms/ web based. Please fix this or does anyone know what is going on? I have a brand new iPad Pro and running the new IOS.

Hello Alma1090,

Thank you so much for your reply! But I think you might have misunderstood me. I can get the speak screen to work in the files and on the pdfs in the app BUT I can not get Speak screen to highlight the words. I have turn on the highlight button and it works for everything else BUT Apples Files app and the PDFs in that app.

I hope Apple can fix this. I am dyslexic and going to to college. I am having to read a lot of PDFs and it would greatly help me if I could follow along while the Speak Screen was reading the PDFs.

I am currently looking for other non Apple apps to see if the Speak screen will highlight PDFs in any of them.

If anyone knows how to fix Speak Screen so it will be completely compatible with Apple’s Files app or if anyone know any other non-Apple apps that can store and mark up PDFs that would.

We understand you're trying to get the words to be highlighted on PDF files from the Files app. We'd be happy to provide information for how to enable this.

Follow the steps here: Hear iPad speak the screen, selected text, and typing feedback

"Change the speech settings

Go to Settings > Accessibility > Spoken Content.
Adjust any of the following:

- Speak Selection: To hear text you selected, tap the Speak button.
- Speak Screen: To hear the entire screen, swipe down with two fingers from the top of the screen.
- Speech Controller: Show the controller for quick access to Speak Screen and Speak on Touch.
- Highlight Content: iPad can highlight words, sentences, or both as they’re spoken. You can change the highlight color and style.
Typing Feedback: You can configure typing feedback for the onscreen and external keyboards and choose to have iPad speak each character, entire words, auto-corrections, auto-capitalizations, and typing predictions.
- To hear typing predictions, you also need to go to Settings > General > Keyboards, then turn on Predictive.
- Voices: Choose a voice and dialect.
- Speaking Rate: Drag the slider.
- Pronunciations: Dictate or spell out how you want certain phrases to be spoken."
