I want to recycle my old MacBook Pro Late 2008.

I’m having a really hard time wiping my hard drive for recycling despite following all the instructions on the Apple website. I’m thinking I will simply remove and destroy the hard drive prior to recycling. Anyone think this is a bad idea?
