Until shortly, I had a keyboard with a 1 above q, 2 above w and so on, which I could type by swiping down from those keys. Somehow those 2-character keys turned to just q, w, … How can I restore this?

Go to the Settings for Keyboard and make sure that Key Flicks is turned on.
Thanks! The problem is apparently that the Dutch description of that setting didn't trigger me. Translated back to English it says: "Enable short touch of keys" which, in my opinion, has nothing to do with the function.
The German translation is a lot better: "Enable swipe keys". Which should actually be the English description, or possibly: "Enable 2-character swipe keys". In Dutch: "Schakel 2-karakter veegtoetsen in".
