iPhone XR Camera Stabilisation Issue

It appears that my out of warranty iPhone XR has developed the what appears to be common fault of the rear camera have an image stabilisation issue. It cannot focus so the screen pulses and makes a high pitched clicking sound, but works fine for close up pics and slo mo, the front camera also works fine.

So I've tried all the usual clean the lens, force re-start the phone, ensure OS is up to date, but with no effect so I am left with getting it repaired.

The big question for me though is anyone able to advise on the repair cost at a Genius Bar in the UK? The timing could not have been worse as I am about to upgrade to the 13 when it comes out (in a couple of weeks?) but the trade value for my XR is £200 with a functioning camera and £60 with the new fault. So is it worth getting it repaired?

After over an hour with support who couldn’t tell me I managed to get them to put me through to my nearest store (pre-booked appointments only due to Covid), and confirmed no repair swap the phone for a new or refurbed unit at a cost of £376. Outrageous for something that a non Apple repair shop charges £100 for.

I guess this phone will be thrown in a draw for emergency backup then, as Apple only offer £60 trade in with a faulty camera!

This is a user-to-user forum. There is nobody here from Apple; To contact Apple use the Get Support link at the top of this page.

If you don’t get an answer in the forum it means that no users who have seen your post feel competent to answer it. However, as I’ve never seen this problem mentioned in the forum before I doubt it is a common fault. One thing to check; if you have the phone in a case with a magnetic closure or a magnet near the phone that can destabilize the image stabilization hardware. It can also be a hardware fault that is the result of dropping the phone.

Harsh, not asking anyone to justify anything. I just asked a question re repair price and then passed on the info I got with a little moan about the policy. People do seem a little uppity here?

But what I’d expect is for Apple to replace the camera unit as it is replaceable, and not force you to buy a whole replacement phone just because 1 small part has gone wrong after 2 years. And will then sell my then repaired phone for £376 to the next person. As I stated in my OP I am upgrading to the 13 when it’s out in a couple of weeks, so little point going down either of the routes open to me, backstreet repair or buy a new phone for £376 to get £200 trade in on that phone in 2 weeks…and is now making me consider an alternative phone now. Apple products used to last for years, but now they are almost throw away every 2 years because they won’t fix the fixable, something that the UK government and EU are actively trying to stop manufacturers from doing.

It’s the equivalent of having to buy another Lambretta because the slide in your phbh30 has worn out and it’s now running too rich.

I’m more of a TV200 man btw, and I suspect it was having the phone attached to the handle bars with a Quadlock that caused the stabiliser to break!

If I had a quid for every iphone camera on here destroyed by motorcycle bar mounts I'd have, well, twenty quid probably.

They will not take it and I doubt the opposition would fare better.

Check Samsung's repair policy. I could never get any response from them and they never upgraded more than once. I have an iphone 6S that runs ios15

“High-power or high-volume motorcycle engines generate intense high-amplitude vibrations, which are transmitted through the chassis and handlebars. It is not recommended to attach your iPhone to motorcycles with high-power or high-volume engines due to the amplitude of the vibration in certain frequency ranges that they generate.”

It’s a Lambretta, doubt it fits into the high-power or high-volume categories 😂

Yes Lambrettas vibrate, if you are getting numb hands after a short ride then you might want to check your crank is balanced or invest in some new silent blocks?

The article suggests the issue is related to the vibration frequency of higher capacity engines, but I would say any vibration will be an issue. Reports on cycling forums of phone’s OIS systems breaking when cycling off tarmac. It is clearly a very fragile component.so I will be avoiding mounting any phone that has OIS without some form of vibration dampener installed.
