I have two MBPs connected together. One I'm booted into and the other is in target disk mode and has an erased drive. I try to run the Systemj installer and get a message that I can't install onto a Mac in target disk mode. Why? That seems pretty ridiculous. Is it some other Apple security issue?

A bootable installer doesn't download macOS from the internet, but it does require an internet connection to get firmware and other information specific to the Mac model.

I can try installing to an external drive with my M1 MBA and see what happens. Will take me awhile to get to it.
No, don't bother, really. It's a lot of hassle.
Come to think of it, that's not going to work. my M1 MBA is no longer on Big Sur so even if successful, I won't know if it's a Big Sur issue or not.
I guess you're using an OS whose name cannot be spoken.
Another issue may be where the installer came from. I was told that the macOS installers are binary, and can install to either Intel or M1, but I'm wondering if that is a problem.

Anyway it looks as if it's failed. Has done anything, nothin's changed since I posted the image.
I gave up and went into Recovery, which of course wants to install Catalina as that was the original OS.
Well, you can always upgrade Catalina once it's installed.
