Synching MacBook Air with iMac

Hi, I'm trying to synch my MacBook Air with my new iMac so that all content is updated on both, regardless of which I am using at the time.

Thought I needed a thunderbolt cable. Bought one but it doesn't fit into any of the ports - not even on the new iMac.

Can I synch the two quickly with a thunderbolt cable?
Can I buy an adaptor for each device and attach the cable that way?

Appreciate any advice. Thanks : )

Ah.... yes of course. Thank you. Just used to navigating my Documents folder only. Stupid me just opened the iCloud Drive on my iMac and everything is there. Does that then make the Documents folder redundant pretty much? Do you use yours?
