Synching MacBook Air with iMac

Hi, I'm trying to synch my MacBook Air with my new iMac so that all content is updated on both, regardless of which I am using at the time.

Thought I needed a thunderbolt cable. Bought one but it doesn't fit into any of the ports - not even on the new iMac.

  1. Can I synch the two quickly with a thunderbolt cable?
  2. Can I buy an adaptor for each device and attach the cable that way?

Appreciate any advice. Thanks : )

The use case you describe is exactly what iCloud Drive is for. https://support.apple.com/guide/icloud/set-up-icloud-drive-mm203b05aec8/icloud
