Tap to click suddenly stops working

Hello!

For the past month, I have had some issues with the tap-to-click function on my Macbook Air M1. Almost every time I open my laptop, despite the function being turned on, tapping to click is simply not working. I tried using Safe mode, the same thing happened, no change in the situation. The issue first appeared in June 2021 (I believe after updating the software but I am not quite sure), it kept happening for a week and then it got fixed by itself. It started again on the first week of August 2021 and it has been going on for the past month. Has anyone else experienced a similar problem? I really hope I can get it fixed without going to a technician.

Thank you in advance for your suggestions!

Hi katerinkaeg,

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!

We understand that you're unable to use the tap-to-click function on your MacBook Air and it appears to come and go, correct?

To help us isolate this behavior further, we'd like to have you create a new user account and test this function in the new user account.

To create a new user account, you can go to the Apple menu  > System Preferences, then click Users & Groups.

Click the lock icon, then enter an administrator name and password.

Click the add button (+) below the list of users.

Complete the fields shown for an Administrator account, then click Create Account (or OK).

Once you’ve created the new account, go to the Apple menu  > Log Out, then log in with the new account to test the tap-to-click function.

If you don't experience the same behavior in a new user account, we'd recommend that you take a look at your login items as outlined here: Remove login items to resolve startup problems on your Mac

We hope this helps.

Cheers!

You're most welcome, katerinkaeg,

We appreciate you giving it a try! Next, we'd like to have you go to the Apple menu  > System Preferences. Then choose Trackpad, click the Point & Click tab, turn off Tap to click, then enable it again. Does this make a difference?

Do you have any external devices, wired or Bluetooth, connected to your Mac?

We look forward to your reply.

Best regards.

Hello!

Usually, this is the procedure I follow when the tap-to-click function stops working. However, sometimes even after ticking the box again to enable it, the functions is again not working. I also tried Apple Diagnostics, it said everything is alright with the hardware.

I do not have anything connected to my laptop.

Thanks again for the help!

Kind regards!

Got it, katerinkaeg,

Thanks for letting us know that you've also check your Mac with Apple Diagnostics.

Next, we'd recommend that you start your Mac in safe mode then attempt to use tap-to-click: How to use safe mode on your Mac

We'd also suggest that you start your Mac in macOS Recovery Mode and check the disk using First Aid: Repair a storage device in Disk Utility on Mac

Let us know how it goes.

Take care!
