"Original Media" Folder - FCP recently started duplicating ALL my MOV media...

FCP has suddenly started making use of the "Original Media" folder for all of my video source files.

My camera shoots MOV natively. So prior to the project I'm working on now, I would just (1) copy from the SD card to a folder on my Mac HD; (2) drag and drop from that folder into the browser; and (3) start editing. Right-click->Reveal in Finder would show the files in the folder I had created and NOT in "Original Media." The only thing in "original media" was necessary transcodes from unusual music library formats, weird AVC cameras I had used, etc.

Now, with this project I just started working on, ALL my source files got copied to the "original media" folder, and FCP is referencing them there. And of course, there are now two gigantic, identical folders full of media on my hard drive.

Did something change in a recent update?

This may be dependent on the folder structure in that card. If FCP perceives it as something in camera (even if it is in a folder in your drive), it will not leave in place.

Make sure that "leave in place" is selected in the import preferences, and when you actually import, see if "leave in place" is not greyed out.

Based on the rapid response by Tom and Luis, I checked the Import dialog and "leave in place" was properly selected. So I made a test file and followed the same workflow again. THIS time, it linked to the file in place. So maybe it was improperly selected when I did the big drag-and-drop the other day.

VERY strange, because I never even USE the import dialog -- I always just drag and drop from a Finder folder. Anyway, seems to be OK now. Thanks for the quick tips!

Now to re-link all that other stuff so I can delete the duplicates....

When you drag and drop from the Finder into an event you should get an icon indicating whether it’s copying or linking the green + icon for copy and the hooked arrow for an alias. If the indicator is wrong you can hold the Option key to insert the behavior.

Is this a new library? What are the library storage settings? The default import settings are to import to the library storage location. Are they set that way? Your settings should be leave in place.
