headphones

hi there

never had this problem before on previous macs. my new one is a 2020 macbook pro running big sur. i use audition and rx izotope for work. normally i can listen to the output of both programmes on my headphones with no issue. on my new laptop i continually have to keep going into preferences and swapping which programme can use my headphones. it is infuriating. can anyone help?
