The last time I backed up my computer in April 2019, everything worked smoothly. However, when I try to backup my mac, I receive an error message. How do I move forward?

How do I fix my backup issue?

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 10.13

Time Machine is trying to back up, and the target Time Machine volume is apparently unavailable for some reason, and Time Machine is now trying to do a backup locally; what’s called a local snapshot. And there’s no room for that.

➡️ About Time Machine local snapshots - Apple Support

Your source device is much too full. This is breaking local snapshots. And your intended Time Machine volume is seemingly offline, or not being referenced, or has failed, or is corrupt.
