How do you get Gmail app to open links in separate app or browser not in the Gmail app?

If you just tap the link it opens your browser, but within gmail. This means you can't go look at other emails (for example to copy something from them) until you are 'done' with the browser.) Very annoying.

You can choose whatever default browser you like but it still opens browser in gmail app not the browser's own app.

Answer is - don't tap the link - press and hold it. Menu pops up and you can then 'open link'. This opens your browser app and opens the link in that, not gmail app.
