Apple watch notifications are awkward

As one of the main features of the apple watch s6, display is always on.

However I notice there is a slight transition of mode after 15s(or 70s depending on settings) of idleness where screen becomes a bit dimmer. This mode transition can be confirmed when the "Always On" option of display is off; the display turns off after the same time above has elapsed.

Now my issue is that when you receive notifications during this mode, nothing really shows up on your screen. It's either gonna keep displaying the watch face, or display remains off when "Always On" option is on or off, respectively.

I can tell I receive notifications because of the notification sound and vibrations. In fact, notifications would then eventually appear after tapping the watch when so.

What's so awkward with this is that, say if your hands were full you can't touch your watch but you want to see what notifications came in. Just imagine the frustration of only seeing an ordinary watch when so. Or even if you tapped your watch expecting a message but instead some "Ring" related notifications.

Oh and I've also been reading other posts, and whether watch was "raised" or not didn't matter.

Also this is not App specific, it applies to any notification, as you may guess from how I described the irritating situation above.

Now with the steps that I've done below, I'm assuming this is a spec (not a bug) and every user would experience the same. Please let me know if this is only me and I should be going to an Apple Store for an exchange or anything else.

  • watchOS 7.6.1
  • Reset (Erase All Content and Settings)
  • The "Always Show Short Looks" notification setting didn't change the matter whether it's on or off
  • Not to mention; any modes that intercepts notifications such as Do Not Disturb mode or whatever are not enabled.

I never experienced this issue, try erasing your Apple Watch. All data from your Watch will be lost during this process. Make sure you have a backup before continuing.

Erase your Apple Watch:

Note: Keep the Apple Watch on its charger and close to the paired iPhone during the entire process.

  1. Open the Watch app on your iPhone (and select the Apple Watch you want to erase if you have multiple).
  2. Tap General
  3. Scroll to the Bottom and tap Reset
  4. Tap Erase Apple Watch Content and Settings
  5. Tap Erase Apple Watch Content and Settings again
  6. If prompted, enter your Apple ID credentials
  7. Follow the onscreen instructions if prompted
  8. Wait until Apple Watch is restored

The re-pair your Watch.

Hey guys thanks for the responses.

I went further reviewing my settings, and noticed that my "Wake on Wrist Raise" setting was off. Enabled this, now I'm seeing notifications how I expect them. I'm guessing you'll never expect to see notifications when watch is facing sideways/downwards to protect user's privacy.

This has solved my issue. Thank you.
