They have been in continuous production since 2006 and older ones have limits on what macOS version can be installed and, therefore, that controls the version of Safari they can run. Do "About this Mac..." from your Apple menu and tell us what that shows for SUB-MODEL, the part that includes a year:

In recent MacOS, Safari is updated with MacOS, not separately.

2014 model MacBook Pro with 15-in screen can run the latest Catalina, and is said to be eligible for the soon-to-be released Monterrey.
