Any issues with M1 chip and plug and play devices?

I have a new MacBook Air 2020M1 and I have an issue where an LG SP80NB80 external RW/DVD Drive does not play. I just replaced my original LG Drive which was 4 months old and LG sent a factory refurbished one as a replacement. I originally had a MacBook Air 2018 that I traded in for the new 2020M1 and the DVD Drive worked perfectly with the 2018.

I also have a Garmin DC-56 dash cam that was not recognized by the Air 2020M1 but worked excellent with the 2018 MacAir. The cam was also replaced under warranty with a factory refurbished cam.

I have worked with Apple technicians on both issues but so far it seems that some plug and play items do not run on the 2020M1. The technicians are still looking at the issue.

My question to the community is anyone else having issues running programs or external plug ins with computers with the M1 chip. Any info would be helpful for as one might expect LG and Garmin blame Apple for the problems. As of now Apple has remained committed with no decision on the party to blame.

How are you connecting these devices to the MBA? It could be an issue with the adapter or cable you are using. Some don't work quite right for some devices when connected to the new MBAs because the ports are the next generation (Thunderbolt4/USB4). Because of that, they may not be allowing proper powering of the devices.

So, beyond that, @tbirdvet suggestion of using a USB hub is the best bet.

Bought a Macbook air in February 2021 with the M1 chip. played dvd movies all along when in mid September, 2021 it stopped playing. Called Apple support and after hours and hours of trying to fix went to Genius Bar at Apple store where I bought it.

They reinstalled the software and problem was solved, but not for long. Three weeks later dvd stopped playing again and after more hours with Apple care, ended up at the Genius Bar again where it was worked on AND NOW TOLD IT CANNOT BE FIXED because it’s the M1 chip. My Apple USB player works with Mac Air in the store because they don’t have the M1 chip I was told.

So now I cannot play Dvds which I do instead of TV players because of hearing and visions issues. The store staff told me maybe there will be a fix update but after reading about this problem with other MacAir users with the M1 this big problem is being stonewalled by Apple. Have any readers of this post with this problem found a solution? Oct. 22,2021

The first question the Apple tech asked was if I was using a hub. I was connected directly to the computer. I even bought new USB adapters, Apple brand, to be sure that wasn't the issue. It still did not work. I even had issues with an Apple DVD drive. The computer went to a full grey screen and did not play. I tried different movies and a music CD and that did not work. The drives indicated power to them but would not read the disks. The Apple DVD did play once but not again. I also tried a second MBA 2020M1 and had the same issues. The Apple tech was on the line with me when trying all the options. He did escalate the problem. I am trying to see if anyone else has this issue.

Need some clarification. Do you mean the DVD will not open the DVD player app and start to play or do you mean your Mac will not even recognize the Apple Super drive player? I have no issue using the Apple Super Drive with my MBA M1 as long as I have a good USB adapter. If the issue is DVD player app will not open automatically to start playing the DVD then please read this:
