Why isn’t there an option to change greyscale intensity?

On all Colour Filters settings except greyscale, there is an intensity slider. this option would be incredibly useful, for instance for people who want to reduce the “candy-like” colours of an iPhone screen without going all the way.

Is there an option to enable this slider, and if not, why would it be excluded specifically from the grayscale filter?

That's not quite what the function means. The way that one works is you start with something that already has a color/hue. You can then add a slider that adjusts a given color from no effect, to .9995 of gray. Almost, but not quite fully desaturated color.

In the case of the grayscale color filter, the entire system is set to desaturated, neutral gray. No color at all. Since there isn't even a hint of color to increase or decrease the intensity of, a slider is pointless.

That makes sense. Still, the issue here would be decreasing the intensity of the greyscale filter, not intensifying colours from a greyscale image. Furthermore, the SwiftUI framework actually has an instance method for this, where the slider is actually adjusting the “intensity” of the greyscale effect: https://developer.apple.com/documentation/swiftui/menu/grayscale(_:)

Given that this greyscale effect apparently can be modified with ease within SwiftUI apps, there is no reason it shouldn’t be added system-wide, in my opinion.

I can only guess you mean gray looks bluish. This has been a problem for decades, starting all the back with the original color TV broadcasts (too long of a story to put here).

Basically, we have all kinds of specifications for "gray", of which (very annoyingly) a gray balance on the bluer end, instead of neutral, is common.

All monitors and televisions out of the box come set to 6500K, which is very obviously blue. Truly neutral gray (what we as humans determine to be as colorless as possible), is 5000K. To be more precise, D50 is neutral.

If this bluish hue is what you're trying to eliminate, you have to change the color of the system. I think it can be done by going into Settings > Display & Brightness > Night Shift. Once there, set things so color balance is the same 24/7.

  1. Scheduled on. From 12:01 AM to 11:59 PM.
  2. Manually Enable Until Tomorrow: On
  3. Slider about 90% of the way to the left, or whatever looks neutral to you.

I haven't tried this to see if it holds continuously day after day, but it's the only way I can see to set the interface to a specific color temp.
