I downloaded an epub book to my iphone, directly from a website. I was not using any app. I don't know where it went nor how to find it. Does anyone know where to find it?

Have a look in the Files folder.
You had to have been using some App. Even Safari, the web browser, is an App. You cannot just magically download a file without using an App. What App were you using when you downloaded the epub file? If Safari, check in the Downloads Folder in the Files App.
Safari should have provided a small icon of a downward facing arrow on the top bar during and after the download. That is a link to the Downloads folder in Files.
