Siri won’t make a call through my AirPods without telling me I have to unlock my phone first

I have an iPhone 12 Pro Max and AirPods Pro yet for some stupid reason, when I try to ask Siri to make a call through the AirPods, I’m told that I have to unlock my phone first. This defeats the purpose of having AirPods in my opinion and I have checked the settings on my phone and I have “allow Siri when locked” selected both under “Siri and Search” and under “Face ID and passcode.” I don’t know what else to do and I have searched this issue and I can see it goes all the way back to last year with no resolution?

Hi rhia2314,

Thanks for contacting the Apple Support Communities!

We understand that you'd like to make a call when your AirPods are connected to your iPhone but Siri indicates that you must unlock your iPhone first. This behavior is expected. Only some features are accessible via Siri when your iPhone is locked. You can go to Settings > Face ID & Passcode to review the list of options that are available.

Feel free to share any feedback you have about this feature with Apple directly here: iPhone Feedback

Take care!

Thanks will be providing feedback. What a useless feature to enable Siri on your AirPods when you can’t even ask it to do the most basic, intuitive thing such as play Spotify without having to unlock your phone first. If I’m going to have to reach for my phone to unlock it then I may as well play the music from there! 🙄 Makes these AirPods Pro the most unnecessarily expensive earphones on the market, better off getting a Jabra or something that’s half the price.
