is the m1 faster than the intel i9?
which processor is faster?

Both are way overkill for those really lightweight tasks.
Either will perform just fine for that.
With that said however, the i9 still out performs the M1 on several benchmarks. But as said for those tasks its unnecessary to have an i9. an i7 ope even a current gen i5 will work for that just fine.

With that said, I would wait for the announcement of the upcoming M1X SoC as that may outperform even the i9. It should be revealed in the coming weeks or couple of months at most.

For most day to day tasks, both can handle things very easily.
The M1 beats or equals the i9 in most benchmarks, even though it is the "lower end".
Also: M1 macs are MUCH cheaper, run cooler, and have much greater battery life - because they incredibly more energy efficient.
There is very little reason why one would spend $3000 on an intel mac today.
The i9, with 8 cores and multithreading, does beat the M1 in multicore tests. The M1 has four high-performance and four efficiency cores. The i9 (I have one!) does however use a LOT of power and the fans run like a vacuum cleaner in my MBP whenever pushed a little. I have been having the fan on most of the time, even though Activity Monitor tells me the CPU is 90% idle...
The i9 loses handily in single core performance, to a processor that uses about a third of the power, and macs that cost a third of the price :-)
Again, since there is no means to verify the results of doing this, it would be impossible to tell you, with any accuracy, which would be fasters. Besides both of these task do not rely totally on CPU processing, but a number of other factors.
Why don't you pay a visit to your local Apple Store and try out a M1 Mac to see for yourself? You can then compare what you experience with your current equipment.
Well yes, its a much less power efficient CPU, but I don't think you are looking for silence and low power consumption when you get an i9.
The i9 is overkill for anything but the most CPU intensive tasks.
If you are looking for a quiet, low power usage CPU then the i9 is clearly not what you want.
Faster for what exactly? Since we cannot run two nearly identical Macs, running each of those CPUs, no real data can be obtained to determine any processing speed differences.
Faster for opening finder files and launching web pages
opening files really is more a measurement of the storage as in SSD vs. old magnetic harddrive

Nope. The current i9 beats the M1.
