Is the M1 Max worth it?

My question here is, the M1 can do many great things already. The M1 Pro can be used by filmmakers and people who use higher power usage, etc. Who would need to use the M1 Max, as the price is quite costly. After watching the Apple event, is there a massive difference other than the CPU and unified memory?

Thanks.

Good observation. Although the question probably could be better phrased. For someone with one of those older models, how does the new machine compare in value to those older models?

That is an excellent question.

The question becomes, is the software catalog you have presently all M1 compatible and capable of taking advantage of the M1 modifications. If not the main take away of the Apple new models is the longer battery life unless as they say you get a model which supports 4 displays. The lack of Boot Camp support is likely to hold a lot of people back.

But if that's not a big deal breaker and you can afford it, the new machines do pack a lot of punch for a small space.

Hi hdruvs3421,

The M1 Max is probably reserved for those who need absolutely the best graphics and/or memory performance possible. This would most likely apply to complex photo/video rendering, and/or 3D rendering.

Also, the M1 Max chip can support 4 external displays, while the M1 Pro chip only supports 2 external displays.

If you're concerned about the price (it is expensive), the M1 Max is probably not the right chip to choose for your situation.

I’m impressed with the specs and power of the new M1Max, but not being a true “power user” or film editor who needs the latest, greatest, fastest CPU, I think I’ll pass. $3,500? Nope.

One thing that really confuses me is the hatred of the task bar. Personally I think it is terrific! I use it all the time and will really miss it. Personally, I think it was under utilized by developers who were too lazy to write code to exploit its capabilities. I suppose I understand that it would require writing code for a small subset of an already small audience, but I will probably wait another 4 or 5 years until I’m unable to upgrade to the latest MacOS to buy a laptop missing my favorite feature.
