I bought an iphone for a friend, when he tried to set it up he forgot his password. I have tried using the restore method Apple support recommends, but it does not work. Is there any other way to rest this phone?

Is it the Lock Screen passcode he can't get past, or is it activation locked and looking for an Apple ID/password?
If it's activation locked, there is no way past that. Only the owner of the account used to lock it can remove that.
If you bought it used, return it and get your money back. If you can't do that, it's probably stolen.

He took it to Apple and they could not help. Is there other software that can be used to erase the phone?
