software update icon is missing

I'm trying to update iOS. Instructions are to open System Preferences then click Software Update. I can't find that icon anymore. I have no idea why it's missing. What now?

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 10.13

Your earlier macOS may not have the Software update in System Preferences.

You still have the option from >About this Mac> Software Update
