macOS Big Sur 11.6

I'm getting the following message when trying to update my Macbook Air for

macOS Big Sur 11.6:


"Current device configuration and target is invalid for install in the current state. Please try again."

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 11.5

First try this

If Intel-based Mac:

Reset SMC

Reset NVRAM

Restart holding Shift to enter Safe Mode. Once up, restart normally and try again.


If M1 Mac, just try Safe Mode.


If it doesn't work, try:

Intel:

Restart holding Command R to load Recovery Mode Use macOS Recovery on a Mac with Apple silicon - Apple Support

Open Disk Utility and run First Aid (See the Repair your internal storage device in the link above)

Now change startup security to medium or high. Here's how to do it About Startup Security Utility - Apple Support


M1

Shut down the computer

Press and hold Power until you see it loading startup menu Use macOS Recovery on a Mac with Apple silicon - Apple Support

Choose Options

Open disk Utility and run First Aid (See the Repair your internal storage device in the link above)

Change Startup Security as said above


After procedures, try updating again.
