apple tv wont turn on without unplugging power every time. Is my unit defective?

What is your model Apple TV? Identify your Apple TV model - Apple Support
Turn it on by pressing the Menu button (or Back button) on the Apple TV remote. Then the status light should flash a few times, and then glow continuously. Then it has started up properly.
