"On" light stays on won't turn off automatically now. Why?

If it’s not functioning as expected , try restarting. Or check your settings:
You can set how long Apple TV waits before automatically going to sleep.
- Open Settings
on Apple TV. - Go to General > Sleep After and choose an option.
