thanks. its a MacBook Pro Retina
13" late 2013
2.4 GHz Intel Core i5
4GB memory
1600 MHz DDR3

4GB of Memory may not be very satisfying if you are try to run the latest macOS

Verify tech specs on the new macOS

Late 2013 is capable of running Big Sur

How to upgrade to macOS Big Sur w/tech specs

https://support.apple.com/en-ca/HT201475

Tech specs—Big Sur

• MacBook (2015 or later)

• MacBook Air (2013 or later

MacBook Pro (Late 2013 or later)

• Mac mini (2014 or later)

• iMac (2014 or later)

• iMac Pro (2017 or later)

• Mac Pro (2013 or later)

This is huge jump— stair stepping your way up is most likely if you are trying to go the whole way.

Get to High Sierra for the stable release, then you may have success going to Big Sur.

The older macOS  installer backups on this server:

verify you are using the Safari browser to download/initiate the macOS links.

Always have a reliable backup plan in place with your current back up—only in this way can you fall back if something goes side ways

What current software update...the macOS (?)

There are at least 52 models of MBP released since January 2006.

You will have to specify what exact Mac you have—software is dependent on your hardware...
