Keynote: change, reset or alter Slide Numbers?

I have one giant Keynote presentation that I use to teach a class for a standard 15 week semester. It's organized by chapter, and I have slide numbers on all slides. Each chapter, I print a 6-up PDF of the lecture notes to give to my students.

Questions:

  1. I'd like to be able to reset the slide numbers to 1 at the start of each chapter (so I can say "See chapter 3, slide 7" rather than "See chapter 3, slide 324" [I really don't want to split my keynote into 15 separate files]
  2. Keynote does not increment the slide # for hidden slides, which is good. However...
  3. Sometimes I will include a slide in my lecture which I do not include in the PDF (perhaps for copyright reasons, perhaps because I don't want students to see the answer to a question, etc.). But when I do this, the slide #s are out of sync between my lecture and the PDF

Other than numberling slides by hand, is there any way to do this?

There isn't a built in tool in Keynote to add custom labels to slides.

The first slide is always 1, with the remaining slides numbered in order.

However, this is the workaround I use:

  1. go to View > Outline
  2. double click the text box next to the blue slide icon
  3. type in the text needed for a label

  • The original slide number is still present

  • If the custom text is not to be shown in the presentation, deselect the Title text box option in Inspector > Format > Slide layout > Appearance
