Update to 11.6 Big Sur fails

My IMac fails to update to the new 11.6 Big Sur.

The update down loads and then goes through "preparing to install" but ultimately fails, with a message to check the internet.

It has downloaded all 5.7 Gb just before so this isn't much wrong with the internet connection.

So far I have turned it off and on - still fails. Then off and on (in safe mode) - still fails

Any ideas what I should try for my next trick?

First thing to check is Empty Disk Space. The lack of empty Space will be a factor and if leas than 15% of the total disk capacity - there will probably be issue now or later.

If this update is for Big Sur 11.6 the error message can be misleading. There are factors like poor Wifi connection, slow wifi connection.

Too many other people downloading at the same time and Apple Severs are overloaded.

Software on the computer interfering with the download process, running behind a VPN.

If via wifi too many Other devices using the wifi at the same time reducing the Bandwidth to your computer.

Best Results are via Ethernet Cable to Router

There are several ways to download the Big Sur 11.6 update.

1 - Connect to Router via Ethernet connection and restart the computer in Safe Mode and then open the Apple Apps Store and get the Full Installer of Big Sur. It will be the 11.6 version and once downloaded run the installer from the Applications folder.

2 - Restart the computer in Recovery Mode ( INTEL Command + r ) and choose Reinstall macOS. It too will download the full Installer and commence the installation. For M1 CPU the Recovery Mode is Here

3 - This method may seem unnecessary but sometimes the Router Restart clears Network issues from ISP to Apple Servers

Shutdown Router. Shutdown computer and disconnect all External Drives. Restart Router. Connect to Router via Ethernet Cable. If via Wifi - Disconnect all other Devices using the Wifi - want the Maximum Bandwidth only for this computer. Restart computer in  Safe Mode. It does a Repair Disk, Clear System Cache files and only load Apple Software, extensions and Fonts. Will load slowly - Normal. Once Logged in - open Apple Apps Store and  Get the Full Version of Big Sur. It will take some time and several pauses will occur - normal. Countdown clock may say 15 minutes but in Real time may be 30 minutes. Same goes for clock at 10 minutes could be 20 minutes in Real time. Eventually , Full Installer will download and a New Application in Applications Folder will present called Install Big Sur. Stop there and perform a Time Machine Backup. If desired - have an External Drive - Copy & Paste the Install Big Sur Application to external drive for future usage - making a Bootable Installer. Now run the Installer.

Have found this method more reliable than the Software Update which is very iffy at best

Are there any AntiVirus, Disk Cleaner, Optimizers, Defrag, VPNs etc installed which should be removed as per Developers Instructions. They are useless, unneeded, cause havoc and interfere with the normal operation of the OS and may even Corrupt the OS requiring a Reinstallation.

Two for two. Big Sur 11.4 to 11.5.2 from Apple Apps Store and then to 11.6 is allowed to download and install.

Really thought Apple was issuing a Full Installer 11.6 once it was released as an update.

This is a real zig and zag method.

Most, if not all, previous Big Sur updates - once in the Public - the Store would have the Full New Version.

At least it did for my units.

Always brought down the Full New Version to make a USB Installer - except for the 11.6.

In my case, it installed it (after extensive delays because the machine sleeps in the middle of an upgrade, ugh). Then, after restarting the machine, it acted as if it had NOT installed it and then I am trying to install it again.

Apple: the lack of feedback of what the process will be, what is needed to achieve the upgrade, how it's going, what it's doing, after so long and so many releases is truly an unfriendly and unprofessional experience. Why you always thing people don't want to know what you are doing and where you are actually in the process, is beyond me. Also, it is NOT in-line with Apple's own user experience guidelines. It took 6 hours to complete the "five minutes remaining" portion of this update, and it still didn't work. Guys, you MUST start dealing with your quality assurance issues instead of pretending like they don't exist.

This has been a problem with Apple for a long time and their answers are not answers. I have seen a Terminal su command that forces it down and once down, the commands to install it. Everything updates but the OS update which seems to fail for a few years now. Turning off all protection and no router problems, it downloads fast and then comes up with a dialog error that "Download Failed". Actually Apple has failed. Support is terrible now and is unprofessional and almost worthless at best. I've had this problem for quite a while now. The beta program had an update for the entire OS that downloaded fine. No such luck with a "production" version of this. Bluetooth is a big problem as well as it isn't even capable of showing the same dialog box correctly and the switches are either not functional when it supposed to discover 3rd party devices but looses them and it's 1 or 2 days worth of getting them connected.

I was getting the same error, time and time again. I tried everything. I then noticed during the attempts to download and update, I was also getting a notice from my Kaspersky Internet Security program that it blocked an attempt to access my webcam. So I turned off the Kaspersky webcam blocking feature and the next attempt to download the update was successful. I cannot tell you why, but it worked.

I was referring to the earlier replies on this thread which suggest downloading from the App Store, which I see above P.Phillips explains gives the Full Installer.

I found the links on the Apple support pages which say they link to the relevant OS downloads App Store but the links do not open successfully for me (despite using Safari as instructed).

I have 50Gb space and no antivirus or mac cleaners installed.

Yes, that's the page I found and when I click on the Big Sur link (in Safari) I get a blank grey browser window and nothing downloads or opens.

As others described in this thread, when I open the system software update in preferences and click to update it progresses to the "Preparing to Install Big Sur" progress bar and gets stuck at 10 mins. I have restarted and tried to reinstall several times. I'm on an early 2015MBA and currently Big Sur 11.4 -- just trying to get it to the latest Big Sur update.
