Renaming Files by Clicking in Finder - Not Working

Hello,

I used to be able to click-to-highlight a file in Finder, then with a single-click on the file name be able to rename the file. This feature no longer seems to be working. I have adjusted the double-click speed of the mouse from slow to fast (and vice versa), but I can't seem to get the feature back. (I know you can rename a file by pressing return, or by right-clicking and selecting rename. My question is about the "single-click to rename" feature).

I am on os Catalina.

I have found the second click unreliable too. Not wishing to waste time poking at a file until a second click actually works, I use the approach I mentioned, or one can also right-click on the file, and choose rename from the secondary menu. That immediately puts the filename in edit mode.
