Whether or not it's "okay" or "safe" really depends on your needs. If you're a whistleblower, spy, activist, cheating on your partner who happens to be in the IT industry, aide to the president, probably not. If you're just chatting with your friends about where to go for drinks, the weather and other normal stuff, it's fine. No one else is going to care enough to spend the significant amounts of time and money required to intercept your conversations.

Whether you want to exchange unencrypted “green” SMS texts is your choice.

No it is not unsafe so long as you keep it updated. Updates provide security fixes...
