Can I get a upgrade through my service provider?

I bought my iPhone from my grandson and paid his balance in full in 1 payment. He set up the phone in my name with my service provider. Do I still have to make a monthly payment to apple for a year to be eligible for a upgrade. Or can I upgrade through my carrier ? I have had this phone for approximately 2 year’s or longer
