Unable to display full screen image on external monitor from an iPhone

How does one get a full screen display on an external monitor connected to an iPhone X using a Lightning HDMI adapter/cable? I only get an image on the monitor that is narrow and tall. I can't stretch the image to fill the screen so there is a great deal of wasted black space on the monitor. Image adjustment settings in the monitor setup only shrinks the image size even smaller. What is the solution here? Advice appreciated.

iPhone X, iOS 14

Hey there TY10,

While what you're describing sounds like expected behavior, we'd like to help any way we can with connecting your iPhone to the external monitor.

You mentioned that it in fact does show an image, but it's narrow and tall, like your iPhone screen. If this is correct, this is expected behavior.

If you're wanting to instead use AirPlay which is another way to get media from your iPhone to your external monitor, check out: Use AirPlay to stream video or mirror the screen of your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

If something else is happening other than what was described above, please provide more details, and all of us will help as much as we can.

Take care!
