I want to add Microsoft word to my I pad. I am not sure how to purchase this item.

As with any App that you wish to install on your iPad, the Microsoft Word App can be downloaded from the App Store:

As with all Microsoft Apps for iPad, be aware that you for full functionality will very likely need an active Microsoft Office 365 subscription. Without an active subscription, for screens greater than 10.1”, you will be restricted to viewing an existing document only.
O365 Subscriptions can be paid-for by way of an In-app purchase - or directly from Microsoft.
