My iPhone XR frequently miscounts steps compared to spouses' iPhone X

My spouse and I both moved to iPhone X recently, she has the X and I have an XR. But we discovered a frustrating anomaly; my XR regularly under counts my steps when we both walk the same route.

I'm not talking about the difference of a few hundred steps, due the various stride length. I'm talking a full 50% fewer steps, the difference of a 1.6 mile walk, while my spouse has the 3.2 miles walk, and we walked together! It makes no difference which third-party app I use, it's always off. Frankly, the Apple health app is useless as it only gives you steps not mileage.

It must be something wrong in the hardware that "notices" the step movement of the iPhone XR while on my person. I thought having "open apps" might be the cause, but closing all apps made no difference. When we're trying to be faithful in our exercise, and record our movement for health purposes, it is so frustrating when the data I receive is unreliable, and it happens almost every week--sometimes more than once.

I guess it's time to invest in a Fitbit and forget the Apple health stuff. Too bad, though, since the phone is already integrated--my XR model just can't count reliably.

Hello, and welcome to Apple Support Communities Padretimoteo,

From your post we can see your iPhone Xr is not counting your steps. You've noticed a difference with your wife's as you're going on the same walks.

There are a few things to check. Go to Settings > Privacy > Motion & Fitness. Let's make sure both Fitness Tracking and Health is enabled. As a suggestion, it's always good to make sure your Health settings are correct and your iOS version is up-to-date.

This resource might help: Manage Health data on your iPhone, iPod touch, or Apple Watch This will allow you to add the missing steps until this is fixed.

We'd also suggest contacting Apple: Contact Apple Support If by updating your iPhone, checking the Health and iPhone settings does not help, this would be the next path to get this working for you.

We hope this helps.

Thank you for these suggestions; unfortunately they haven't helped. The incorrect counting occurs daily now. Something is seriously wrong, because today the difference was a half-mile in length.

BTW this discrepancy did not occur when my spouse was using an iPhone 6 and I had an iPhone 6S. The counts then were nominally different probably due to height and stride length. It has been since we've upgraded to iPhone X and XR this major discrepancy in distance on a shared walk started.

Even if I dumped the Apple Health app, I believe the problem rests in the haptics portion of the hardware. It seems to me that deleting Apple Health and finding a different app (perhaps my spouses Fitness app) wouldn't solve the problem--unless you have another idea.
