I need a new Apple ID but want to keep and not loose my existing text messages on my iphone.
if I delete my iCloud account and open a new one, will my text messages get deleted from my iPhone? Would they also delete if I decided to edit my current ID?

You can transfer most of your data, and none of your iMessage messages, nor SMS, nor app purchases, nor subscriptions.

If you delete your Apple ID, ALL ASSOCIATED ACTIVATION-LOCKED DEVICES WILL BE BRICKED.
Again, any devices with an Activation Lock associated with a deleted Apple ID are bricked. Best case, you have original purchase receipts showing serial number, and can convince Apple to un-brick the device. As has happened rather too often for those deleting their Apple ID without first having disassociated their devices, permanently bricked,

We understand that you have some questions about your Apple ID and syncing data.
If your Message app is set to sync with iCloud and you sign out of your iCloud Apple ID then that synced data will no longer be syncing as it is tied to your Apple ID.
If you change the email address that is your Apple ID, which means you aren’t removing your account, you’re only changing the name it goes by, then any syncing data will still be there. Change your Apple ID
