Apple Music Draining Battery with Background Acitvity

Hi All! The Apple Music app seems to be running constantly in the background and very quickly draining my battery on my iPhone 12 Pro. Just started today. In doing some research, I see this was an issue back in July 2020, and then was resolved by an iOS update.

I didn't have this problem in July 2020, but have it now starting today. I'm wondering if anyone else is having this issue and if it is relate to the iOS 14.8 security update. All of the articles I can find about this issue are from July 20202 and not recent, so thought I'd reach out to the community and see if anyone else is encountering this issue.

Thank you!

I believe I found a solution- open Music, in the menu bar select Account and if you are signed in, simply sign out. This will disconnect the Music program from iCloud synching which in turn will stop the computer from connecting to your phone (even when the program is not in use) to try and synch in the background. Once I did this, Music is no longer constantly connecting the Mac and the phone, and the battery stopped draining. When I want to use Music I simply sign in to my account to have access to all my music on iTunes etc.

Hi Shabooms13,

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities. We understand that you're experiencing battery drain after updating to iOS 14.8. This is expected behavior for your battery within the first few days after updating your device. You can turn off BackGround App Refresh in Settings > General > Background App Refresh. Please also see tips on how to Maximizing Battery Life and Lifespan here.

Kind regards.

Hi All!,

I had indeed the same problem with my iPhone XR, and even on my new iPhone 13. I searched on the internet and tried several solutions available, but without results. The solution I found will surprise you.

In my case, I realized that the problem was caused by my MacBook Pro. Yes, you read that right, my MacBook Pro! The Music application on my MacBook Pro was constantly communicating with my iPhone 13.

The solution I found was to eject the iPhone in question from the Music application. You can see this iPhone, or other IOS devices in the left section of the Music application. You need to perform this operation using your cable connected to your computer. I also had to delete my music on my iPhone in order to be able to eject my iPhone from the Music application permanently. I then reinstalled the music on my iPhone and had to eject my iPhone from the Music application again without any problem. You must also disable the automatic WIFI synchronization via the Finder and not make the iPhone appear in the Finder.

Now I have no problem using the Music app on my iPhone in the background. It is very important that your iPhone is not visible to the Music application.

Is this a normal behavior of the Music application or is it an IOS problem following an update? I can't answer...

I have been having this problem too, on a 9.7" iPad Pro (1st gen, ~6 years old now). Turning off background app refresh for the Music app did not fix the problem. As I no longer use Music on the iPad, I ended up just deleting the app and that seems to have fixed the problem for me. I realize that is not a great solution for most people. Would be great to get an iOS, iPadOS fix...

Following up on previous posts. I have now disabled 'Find My iPhone', and am running my phone permanently in Low Power Mode. The App Store was the third culprit of battery drain after Find My iPhone.

My phone was literally fine until last week when all these Apple apps began marching my battery to death. Since I have not recently made any changes to my phone, nor installed any OS updates, there is no excuse for this save negligence or intentional planned obsolescence.

I may do a full wipe on my phone, which wastes my time, to see if that helps. The idea of tossing a phone I paid close to 2K on over Apple-caused battery drain on an Apple device isn't a good look. If this is the future of the iPhone, my next phone will not be an Apple device.

I just noticed the same issue after my phone battery died, Apple Music eating my battery life. I never use Apple Music though, and never connect my iPhone to my Mac. Regardless, I checked on my MacBook and my phone is not connected/mounted.

This sounds like one of the planned obsolescence 'bugs' that magically appear on older phones to force users to move to newer versions....There's literally no reason for an app I never use to refresh anything, period.

For the record I have verified:

  • No Background App refresh
  • No Location Services
  • No iPhone connected to Apple Music
  • No usage of Apple Music (MacBook or iPhone) whatsoever
  • No connection to cars/etc.

I don't think that Apple will look closely at these case, but I queue in with the problem.

I see constantly battery drain from Music-App, even not used for weeks.

But also the Find-My App seems to suck the battery badly, if looking in the iOS Settings -> Battery

iPhone 12 mini and iPad mini 6. - Glad that I didn't paid for these devices. iOS quality going downhill, not just from this point of view.
